Decoding VC-VF Model Body Numbers 

The number is stamped to the inner guard on drivers side

The First Character Is "V" For Valiant.
The Second Character Is The Model C/E/F
Third character indicates The Transmission Factory Fitted To The Vehicle;

  • 3 = 6 Cylinder Manual Transmission
  • 4 = 6 Cylinder Automatic Transmission
  • 6 = 8 Cylinder Automatic Transmission
  • 7 = 6 Cylinder Hp Manual Transmission
  • 8 = 6 Cylinder Hp Automatic Transmission

Fourth character is price range of the vehicle;

  • L = Low Price Range
  • E = Economy Price Range
  • M = Medium Price Range
  • H = High Price Range
  • S = Special Price Range
  • P = Premium Price Range
Fifth & Sixth characters represent the Factory Body Type;
  • 20 = Utility
  • 23 = 2 Door Hardtop
  • 41 = 4 Door Sedan
  • 45 = 4 Door Wagon

Each body number then finishes in its own unique factory production line number starting in 00001

FOR EACH BODY TYPE

For example "VF3-E-20-00027"

VF 6 cylinder manual transmission, economy price range, utility and was number 27th off the assembly line.

Decoding VG-CM Model Body Numbers

All models from VG VH CH VJ CJ have an ID plate on the drivers side plenium cowl, which shows the body number and factory options. 

All models from VK CK CL & CM have an ID plate on the Drivers side plenium cowl, which shows the body number. They also have an option plate on the passenger side with factory options stamped on that plate.

  1. The first and second characters are the series. For example; VG VH CJ
  2. The third character is a number 1-8 which decodes to the engine & transmission combination:
    • 1 = 6 Cylinder manual
    • 3 = 6 Cylinder manual
    • 4 = 6 Cylinder automatic
    • 5 = 8 Cylinder manual
    • 6 = 8 Cylinder automatic
    • 7 = 6 Cylinder manual
    • 8 = 6 Cylinder automatic
  3. The fourth character represents the price range;
    • L = Low
    • E = Economy
    • M = Medium
    • H = High
    • D = Delux
    • S = Sport
    • P = Premium
  4. The fifth & sixth characters represent the factory body types;
    • 22 = Utility
    • 23 = 2 door hardtop (long wheel base)
    • 29 = 2 door charger (short wheel base)
    • 41 = 4 door sedan
    • 45 = 4 door wagon
  5. The seventh character represents the Factory coding for the Year of the build date e.g. C= 72 (A=1970 B=1971 C=1972 D=73 E=74 etc)
  6. The eighth character represents the Factory coding for the month of the build date e.g. D=April (A=Jan B=Feb C=Mar D=Apr E=May etc)
  7. The ninth & tenth characters represents the Factory coding for the day of the month of the build date e.g. 6 = 6th day of the month

Each body number then finishes in its own unique factory, production line number starting in 0001.

VJ, High price, Wagon built April 6th - 768 sequential build number.
