After daily phone calls from new clients looking to remove their existing "Modified Rack & Pinion" setup supplied by other vendors. We found these new clients with this type of conversion encountered all kinds of problems both short term and long term.
When you take into account that vehicles produced from car manufacturers with a "rack & pinion" setup were a "Coil sprung front end", This setup with a coil sprung front end performs well. However, our Australian Built Valiant's were all manufactured as a monocoque / unibody with a torsion bar front end. (2x bars twisted under load to lift the front suspension to the desired ride height). With the Rack & Pinion setup in the torsion bar sprung vehicle it changes the steering characteristics due to higher preload on the ends of the torsion bars and without the additional weight of the removed factory steering components - eg steering tubes, tie rod ends, steering box, idler arm , pitman arm & draglink. This is supposed to act as a counterweight, which keeps the steering & wheels straight over uneven road conditions as higher speeds.
Below are the some of the problems the new potential clients encountered:
- Excessive Bump steer (off the road and onto the wrong side of the road)
- Engineering required for either cradle mount or K frame mount versions
- Additional Engineering fees
- Manufactured in one state not legal in another
- Factory steering columns cut/modified ( once cut, cant go back to factory steering without sourcing a replacement steering shaft)
- Oil Pan / Sump modifications required
- K frame modification required
- Replacement parts unavailable due to unknown origin of parts used.
- Exhaust modifications required
- Oil line modifications required
- Additional Core Deposit Charges
